Sustainability becomes useful when it can be measured at farm and crop level. Three practical starting points are water input, electricity use and harvested output.
Use comparable units
Energy and water should be recorded per month and per kilogram of saleable crop. Crop loss should separate germination loss, production loss and unsold harvest. These measures expose trade-offs that a single headline percentage can hide.
Demand-led planting can reduce unsold output. Recirculating irrigation can reduce water discharge. Solar can reduce purchased electricity. None of those benefits should be assumed identical for every site or crop.
Build an evidence trail
Meter readings, crop-cycle records and dispatch data create a baseline. Improvement can then be demonstrated against the farm’s own measured history.
